The African Grantmakers Network brings together grantmaking organisations from all over Africa to consolidate the voice for African Philanthropy.
Mission Statement: To be a platform for the promotion of an African voice and agenda for philanthropy.
Vision: Transformed, relevant, vibrant and sustainable African philanthropy
The formation of AGN is a culmination of several formal and informal meetings among a number of grantmaking African foundations spanning a period of 3 years. The first formal meeting organized by the founder members, i.e. the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF), and TrustAfrica, was held in Accra, Ghana in July 2009, during which the Network was officially launched. The participants who were African Grantmakers took the time to consolidate the rationale for the network and what goals it would be seeking to fulfill. In February 2010, the Steering Committee made of the founding members of AGN and other key members met in Johannesburg South Africa, to develop a strategic direction and plan for the network and its secretariat, currently hosted by Trust Africa.
Since then, the momentum is now building towards a public launch of the network at a Pan African assembly of African Grantmakers. Altogether, more than 200 participants are expected to come from across Africa to this assembly, whose theme will be Setting an African Agenda for Philanthropy in the continent.
